An art history of Dunhuang Caves is also a history of Chinese religion and culture, which presents a magnificent historical picture to the world.

In 1987, Dunhuang Mogao Caves, the world's largest surviving Buddhist cave art sanctuary, were successfully inscribed as a world heritage site. There are altogether six criteria for applying for world cultural heritage. If one of them is met, the application conditions are met, and the Dunhuang Mogao Caves meet all six criteria. Like the Mogao Caves, there are only two cultural heritage sites in the world that meet all six criteria: the Mogao Caves and Venice. Just as the master of Chinese studies, Mr. Ji Xianlin, said, “There are only four cultural systems in the world with a long history, a vast territory, a self-contained system and far-reaching influence: China, India, Greece and Islam, and no fifth, and there is only one place where these four cultural systems converge: the Dunhuang and Xinjiang regions of China, and no second.”

Adhering to the concept “From Jiangnan to the World”, Suzhou Museum launched the “World Cultural Heritage Series Exhibitions” in 2021, and the first exhibition “Discovery and Inheritance of Dazu Rock Carvings” let the audiences feel the infinite charm of Dazu rock carvings represented by “Five Mountains”. This year, with “Dunhuang” as the theme, we planned the “The Place Where My Heart Belongs-Special Exhibition of Dunhuang Art Copying and Spiritual Inheritance”.

Different from the previous Dunhuang themed exhibitions, this exhibition focuses on three aspects: Dunhuang murals, Dunhuang caves art, Dunhuang studies and documents. The main line is the copying and studying achievements of Dunhuang art by artists such as Zhang Daqian, Chang Shuhong, Xie Zhiliu, Lu Shi, Duan Wenjie, Shi Weixiang, Ouyang Lin and Chang Shana. Through the restoration of the earliest Cave 275 of Dunhuang, and 116 pieces of exquisite antiquities such as Ye Changchi’s Yuan Du Lu Diary, the earliest original manuscript of Dunhuang Library Cave, the exhibition traces the history of Dunhuang, displays Dunhuang art, tells Dunhuang stories and inherits the Dunhuang spirit.

The Dunhuang murals displayed in the exhibition cover a wide range of genres, including story paintings, sutra paintings, Buddha paintings, donor paintings, decorative patterns, and cover different techniques such as recovery copying, current situation copying and fix-up copying. Each line in the painting unites the youth of generations of Dunhuang guardians who, through the paper and brush in their hands, dialogue with the ancients and explore the beauty of Dunhuang art, giving an up-close look at the thousand-year-old compassionate eyes of the Buddha and the moving figure of the flying apsaras. This contains a cultural penetration and artistic vitality that cannot be achieved without a blend of regeneration and realistic concern, which is the spirit of the times in Dunhuang art.

This reinterpretation of Dunhuang art would not have been possible without the full support of the Dunhuang Academy, Sichuan Museum, Zhejiang Provincial Museum and Suzhou Library, as well as the great support of Lu Shi's family, Mr. Tian Hong and Mr. Luo Lunjian. I would like to express my most sincere thanks!

Dunhuang, through a thousand years of vicissitudes, stands still in the East, just where my heart belongs.
